LUCID Registration Guide – Packaging Compliance in Germany

LUCID Registration Guide – Packaging Compliance in Germany

LUCID Registration is the official process for complying with the German Packaging Act (VerpackG). It is required for any company that introduces packaged goods to the German market. The system is managed by the Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister (ZSVR) and aims to ensure producers take responsibility for the environmental impact of their product packaging.

Who Needs to Register with LUCID?

If you sell or ship products to customers in Germany and your goods include any form of packaging, such as boxes, wrapping, labels, or filler, you are legally obligated to register in the LUCID system. This includes:

  • German businesses selling physical goods
  • Foreign companies exporting to Germany
  • Amazon FBA sellers and e-commerce platforms
  • Brand owners and private label sellers

What Are the Compliance Steps?

LUCID Registration is part of a broader Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. The process includes three core steps:

  • Register in the LUCID system via the ZSVR portal using your company details.
  • License your packaging with a certified dual system (e.g. Interseroh, Reclay, Zentek) based on volume.
  • Report your packaging volumes annually to both LUCID and your dual system provider.

What Happens if You Don’t Register?

Non-compliance with VerpackG can lead to serious consequences:

  • Fines up to €200,000
  • Sales bans in Germany
  • Removal of listings from Amazon and other marketplaces
  • Reputational damage and customs delays
