Amazon ERN 2026: How to Get an EU Packaging EPR Registration Number

If Amazon is asking you for an ERN (EPR Registration Number) for EU packaging, you are not alone.

Amazon sellers are receiving Account Health notices stating:

“Submit your EU packaging registration numbers by 12 August 2026.”

The notice may also say:

“Your Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Registration number (ERN) for EU packaging (PPWR) is missing in one or more EU countries.”

What is an ERN on Amazon?

ERN means EPR Registration Number.

EPR stands for Extended Producer Responsibility.

In the context of Amazon's EU packaging compliance notices, an ERN is the registration information Amazon is requesting to verify that the relevant packaging producer has complied with applicable packaging Extended Producer Responsibility registration requirements.

Amazon may display this under:

Account Health → Regulatory compliance → Manage your compliance → Submit Compliance information → EPR → packaging

The warning may refer to the “EPR Registration number (ERN) for EU packaging (PPWR).”

This wording can make it sound as though there is a single new PPWR registration number covering the whole European Union.

There isn't.

Is there one EU ERN for Amazon?

No. There is not one universal EU packaging ERN that you can enter for every EU country.

Packaging producer registration is implemented through Member State systems.

That means an Amazon seller may require different packaging registrations for different EU markets, depending on where the seller qualifies as the packaging producer.

The EU's packaging EPR landscape contains significantly different national systems. The October 2025 overview, for example, identifies competing packaging PROs in countries including Germany and Sweden, while other Member States operate different models.

So if Amazon asks you for an EU packaging ERN, don't assume that one registration number will resolve every country.

Why is Amazon asking for my EPR Registration Number?

The timing is connected to the EU's new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), Regulation (EU) 2025/40.

PPWR entered into force on 11 February 2025 and applies from 12 August 2026, although many individual obligations have their own later application dates.

The Regulation includes packaging producer registration and Extended Producer Responsibility provisions.

It also places obligations on online platforms concerning producers offering products to EU consumers.

This is why Amazon is increasingly requesting packaging producer-registration information through its compliance systems.

But there is a critical distinction:

Amazon asking your seller account for an ERN does not automatically prove that your company is legally the packaging producer.

Producer status has to be determined.

How do I get an ERN for Amazon?

There is no single website where an Amazon seller can obtain an “EU ERN.”

Instead, the process generally looks like this:

Determine producer status → identify the relevant EU Member State → complete national packaging registration requirements → arrange PRO/recycling-system participation where required → receive the applicable registration information → submit the required information to Amazon

The exact procedure varies by country.

Step 1: Check EU product safety before applying for an ERN

An EPR Registration Number does not establish that your product is legal to sell in the EU.

Amazon sellers should first establish whether their products meet the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) or other applicable EU product-safety legislation.

Step 2: Determine whether you actually need an ERN

Amazon sellers should not automatically apply for an EPR registration in every EU country.

First determine who is legally the producer.

This is particularly important for non-EU sellers.

The European Commission's June 2026 PPWR guidance addresses the definition of a packaging producer and makes clear that producer status depends on the circumstances under which packaging or packaged products are made available.

For an Amazon business, the assessment can depend on:

  • where the seller is established;
  • where the manufacturer is established;
  • where products enter the EU;
  • whether an EU importer is involved;
  • whether the seller supplies directly to end users;
  • the destination Member State;
  • whether sales are B2B or B2C;
  • who owns or uses the brand;
  • the packaging type; and
  • the Amazon fulfilment structure.

For example, the analysis for:

Australian seller → direct sale → Swedish consumer

may be different from:

Chinese manufacturer → German importer → Amazon → Swedish consumer.

Do not assume that the Amazon seller, brand owner, manufacturer or importer is automatically the EPR producer.

Step 3: Identify which Amazon EU countries require an ERN

Amazon's warning may identify one or more EU countries.

Check each country shown in Account Health.

Common Amazon markets can include:

Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, Poland and other EU Member States.

The registration requirement needs to be assessed country by country.

This is why searching for an “EU ERN number” can be misleading: there is no single ERN registration that automatically replaces all applicable national packaging registrations.

Amazon ERN for Sweden: What Sellers Need to Know

Sweden is particularly relevant because Amazon sellers are seeing notices requesting an EPR Registration Number (ERN) for packaging in Sweden.

If Amazon shows:

EPR → packaging → Sweden

the first question should not be:

“Where can I buy an ERN?”

It should be:

“Is my company the packaging producer in Sweden?”

If the answer is yes, the seller needs to establish the applicable Swedish packaging producer-responsibility requirements.

The available Member State EPR overview identifies Sweden as having a competing packaging PRO system.

Completing the actual producer-responsibility requirements and entering an ERN into Amazon are related, but they are not necessarily the same administrative step.

Amazon wants my Swedish ERN, but I don't have one

Do not invent an EPR Registration Number.

Do not enter a PRO customer number, VAT number, company registration number or another environmental registration number simply because Amazon's ERN field requires an entry.

If the competent national system has not yet provided the specific ERN Amazon requests, retain evidence showing that you have completed the applicable producer-registration and PRO requirements.

Where necessary, the discrepancy should be raised through Amazon's compliance or Account Health process using the available registration evidence.

The Commission's June 2026 PPWR guidance itself acknowledges that PPWR implementation continues to require further implementing measures, delegated acts, standardisation work and guidance over the coming years.

Is an Amazon ERN the same as a LUCID number?

No.

LUCID is Germany's packaging register.

If your company qualifies as a producer subject to German packaging obligations, Germany can require registration in the LUCID Packaging Register as well as other applicable packaging-system obligations.

But a German LUCID registration does not automatically give you packaging EPR registration in Sweden, France, Spain, Italy or other EU countries.

Likewise, a registration obtained in another Member State does not automatically replace German LUCID obligations.

Do I need a separate ERN for France?

Potentially.

France has its own packaging EPR framework and additional consumer sorting-information requirements.

Depending on the products and packaging concerned, Triman and Info-Tri requirements may also need to be addressed. The French materials describe the use of the Triman symbol together with sorting information for relevant EPR streams.

Is an ERN the same thing as PPWR compliance?

No. This is a very important distinction.

Amazon may describe the requested number as an:

“EPR Registration number (ERN) for EU packaging (PPWR)”

But having an ERN does not mean your packaging itself complies with all applicable PPWR requirements.

Think of the two issues separately.

This concerns matters such as:

producer registration + PRO/recycling arrangements + packaging reporting + environmental fees

PPWR packaging conformity

PPWR also regulates the packaging itself.

Regulation (EU) 2025/40 covers the lifecycle of packaging and establishes requirements concerning matters such as packaging sustainability, recyclability, minimisation, recycled content and labelling, subject to the respective provisions and application dates.

PPWR compliance can therefore require considerably more than obtaining an ERN.

Is the EPR producer the same as the PPWR packaging manufacturer?

Not necessarily.

This distinction matters enormously for Amazon sellers.

The producer responsible for packaging EPR and the manufacturer responsible for packaging conformity can be different economic operators.

The Commission's June 2026 PPWR guidance separately addresses the definitions of the packaging manufacturer and producer.

This is another reason sellers should not simply obtain an ERN and assume the entire PPWR problem has been solved.

How to submit your ERN to Amazon

Amazon's notice directs sellers who already have an ERN to submit it through Account Health.

The path shown in the Amazon notice is:

Account Health → Regulatory compliance → Manage your compliance → Submit Compliance information → EPR → packaging

Select the relevant EU country and provide the requested registration information.

If Amazon identifies several countries, assess each country separately.

Do not reuse one country's ERN for another country unless the applicable system expressly supports that result.

What happens if I don't submit my ERN to Amazon?

Amazon's Account Health notice warns that affected EU listings may be removed if the requested registration requirements are not addressed.

Sellers should therefore treat an ERN compliance warning seriously.

But the solution is not simply to find any number that Amazon's system accepts.

The objective should be to:

determine producer status → complete the correct registration → obtain valid evidence → submit the correct ERN to Amazon

This protects both the Amazon account and the underlying legal compliance position.

What if Amazon asks for an ERN that I haven't received?

First establish whether you are legally required to register and whether the applicable national registration has been completed. Do not invent a number. Retain registration evidence and address any mismatch with Amazon's compliance process.

Does an ERN prove GPSR compliance?

No. GPSR/product safety and EPR are separate legal systems.

Does an ERN prove PPWR compliance?
