Important: Product Safety Comes First

An ERN does not establish that your product is compliant with EU product-safety legislation.

Before EaseCert provides Packaging EPR or ERN registration services, the products concerned must first have been certified by EaseCert for the applicable EU product-safety requirements, including the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) where applicable.

The correct compliance sequence is:

EU Product Safety / GPSR → Packaging EPR / ERN → PPWR

GPSR, Packaging EPR and PPWR are separate legal requirements.

What Is an ERN?

ERN means EPR Registration Number.

EPR stands for Extended Producer Responsibility.

For packaging, producer registration forms part of the system used by EU Member States to identify businesses responsible for packaging placed on their national markets and to administer packaging waste obligations.

An ERN may be requested by online marketplaces such as Amazon as evidence that the relevant packaging producer has addressed applicable national registration requirements.

There is no single universal EU packaging ERN covering every EU Member State.

Packaging producer registration remains country-specific. A business selling into several EU countries may therefore need separate producer assessments and registrations.

Amazon Asking for an ERN?

Amazon sellers may receive a notice stating:

“Your Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Registration number (ERN) for EU packaging (PPWR) is missing in one or more EU countries.”

If you receive this warning, do not automatically register in every EU country and do not enter an unrelated number simply to clear the compliance alert.

The first step is determining whether your company is actually the packaging producer in the country identified by Amazon.

There Is No Single EU ERN

An important point for marketplace sellers is that an EU ERN is not one registration number covering the entire European Union.

Packaging producer-registration obligations are administered at Member State level.

For example, a German packaging registration does not automatically replace a Swedish packaging registration, and a Swedish registration does not automatically satisfy requirements in France, Italy or Spain.

Your obligations must therefore be assessed country by country.

Important: ERN / EPR and PPWR Compliance Are Separate

Obtaining an ERN does not mean that your packaging is fully compliant with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Important: EaseCert Is Not a PRO or Recycling Company

EaseCert is a compliance assessment and implementation partner.

EaseCert is not a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO), recycling company, waste collector, dual-system operator or government authority.

We provide producer-status assessment, registration guidance, documentation preparation, reporting setup, labeling review and registration coordination.

Where registration must legally be submitted or confirmed directly by the producer, authorised representative, PRO or another designated party, we will provide the necessary guidance and documentation support.

Third-Party Fees Are Not Included

The €400,00 EUR EaseCert service fee does not include third-party charges unless expressly stated otherwise.

Depending on the Member State, additional costs may include:

What does ERN mean?

ERN means EPR Registration Number. It is the term commonly used for registration information associated with Extended Producer Responsibility requirements.

Is there one ERN for the whole EU?

No. There is no single packaging EPR Registration Number that automatically covers all EU Member States.

Packaging producer-registration requirements are administered nationally, so separate registrations may be required depending on where your company qualifies as the producer.

How do I get an ERN for Amazon?

First determine the EU country identified by Amazon and whether your business qualifies as the packaging producer there.

Does Amazon issue the ERN?

Not automatically.

Your packaging producer status must be assessed for each relevant Member State based on your establishment, sales model, supply chain, importer/distributor arrangements and destination market.

Can I use the same ERN for every EU country?

Do not assume so. National packaging registrations are country-specific.

Is a VAT number an ERN?

No. A VAT number should not be substituted for an EPR Registration Number merely because a marketplace requests an ERN.

Is a PRO customer number an ERN?

Not necessarily. A PRO membership or customer number should only be used where it is actually the registration information required by the applicable national system and marketplace.

Is Germany's LUCID number an ERN?

Germany operates the LUCID Packaging Register. Businesses subject to German packaging producer-registration requirements receive a LUCID registration number.

Does an ERN make me PPWR compliant?

No.

Packaging EPR registration and PPWR packaging conformity are separate compliance requirements.

An ERN may demonstrate an aspect of producer registration, but it does not by itself demonstrate compliance with PPWR requirements concerning packaging design, recyclability, recycled content, minimisation, labeling, documentation or other applicable requirements.

Does an ERN make my product GPSR compliant?

No.

GPSR concerns product safety. Packaging EPR concerns producer responsibility for packaging waste. PPWR establishes separate packaging requirements.

Can EaseCert register products that EaseCert has not certified?

EaseCert provides Packaging EPR, ERN, LUCID, WEEE, Batteries and related environmental compliance services only for products that have first been certified by EaseCert for the applicable EU product-safety requirements.

If your product has not yet completed this process, the applicable product-safety assessment must be addressed first.

Does EaseCert pay my recycling or PRO fees?

No. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, PRO fees, recycling fees, environmental contributions, government fees and other third-party costs are paid separately by the customer.

Does this service include PPWR packaging conformity?

No.

The ERN Registration Service focuses on national packaging producer-registration and associated EPR implementation.

For packaging conformity requirements, use the separate PPWR Compliance Service (€500,00 EUR).

How much does the EU ERN Registration Service cost?

The EU ERN Registration Service costs €400,00 EUR per EU Member State.

If registration support is required in three Member States, for example, the EaseCert service total would be €1.200,00 EUR, excluding applicable third-party fees.
